How to Temporarily or Permanently Disable Windows Defender in Windows 10

Disabling Windows Defender Temporarily

  1. Launch the Start menu by clicking the Windows icon located in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
  2. Now, you need to locate the gear icon located in the left pane of the Start menu.
  3. Click on the Settings icon.
  4. In the Settings screen, select Update and Security.
  5. After that, select the Windows Security option from the left pane.
  6. Now, go to Protection areas and select Virus and threat protection.
  7. Scroll down and click on the Virus and threat protection settings link.
  8. Now, scroll down to Real-time protection.
  9. Click on the bar below it, and turn real-time protection off.
  10. When the prompt appears, click on the Yes option.
  11. Windows Defender will stay disabled until the system gets rebooted.

Disabling Windows Defender Permanently

  1. Launch the Start screen. You can either click on the Windows logo or press the Win key.
  2. Wait for the Start menu to appear.
  3. Now, you need to launch Registry Editor.
  4. Enter Regedit text in the search option.
  5. Now, click on the broken cube icon called regedit.
  6. After that, press the Yes button when the prompt comes.
  7. Now, you need to expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. Double-click on it,
  8. Double-click on the Software folder for expanding it.
  9. Locate the Policies folder, and double-click on it to expand it.
  10. After that, find Microsoft folder and double-click on it.
  11. Finally, click on the Windows Defender folder.
  12. Now, you need to right-click on the chosen folder.
  13. From the menu that appears, select New.
  14. From the pop-out menu, click on DWORD 32-bit Value.
  15. Rename the DWORD file to DisableAntiSpyware and hit the Enter key.
  16. Double-click on the renamed file.
  17. In the following screen, change the Value data to 1.
  18. Hit the OK option located at the bottom of the screen.

  23. Double-click on DisableAntiSpyware.
